Came across this penny today. Never have seen one of these with the mintmark so high. Anyone else ever come across this?

Hi, nlp, That mint mark does look "high" nice coin though, looks like a small date?

That's a 'small date' or 'high 7', described in this thread

I'm not convinced its a small date. LIBERTY is fairly bold and consistent. On the small date I have an UNC and the loop of the 9 looks a little more squatty and oval... nlp

That sure is a high MM! Looks like a large date to me, the bottom of the 7 extends too far below the bottom of the 0.

I think its a large date also! as nlp noted Liberty is very bold and from what I can see the 7 looks to be below the 9

In my opinion this coin does exhibit a high mint mark but is not a small date, as stated above, the letters in liberty are too bold"ty" the 7's leg is lower than the zero, the 7 has the classic die groove where the horizontal and vertical lines meet at the top, and the top loop in the 9 is not as complete as the small date exhibits also the inner loop in the 9 is not pointed, rather blunt as in the lagre date, I could be wrong, just my opinion...

with the others...it's a large date that's taken some hits to the digits. Too bad, because that would mean a new SD die we haven't seen.
I've looked for SDs for years, and I think I've run across this mm position before. I'd keep it just as a curiosity.

I've enlarged the date area with a baseline drawn across the "0":

I'll hold onto this one just because the MM is so high. DVcollector, that baseline makes the difference for these old eyes. Thanks! nlp

As you all may know that the mint marks prior to 1990 were added to the die by hand. So anywhere in that area is normal.
