I have purchased the #8140 to replace #7140 Dansco Washington quarter albums from two different vendors. Both have the same problem. On each page, the hole on the second row second from the right side is too large and the quarters fall loosely in turnabout. I wonder if anyone has experienced this in these or other albums. Is so, or if you have some ideas, I would appreciate how I could "wedge" the coins to tighten them without unsightly obstruction. By the way, all my other Dansco albums do not have this problem. Indeed, I have purchased to additional quarter pages and they fit perfectly. Maybe, I'm just unlikely.

Mine does that too. Guess it was a flaw in the manufacturing process.
This is the only album of theirs that I have this issue

I have this issue with the 7070 US Type Set album. In this case, it's not really the album that is at fault but rather the fact that early US coins, especially early large cents it seems, varied in diameter due to the striking process (open collar).

What I have done is take some archive grade card stock, close in color, and cut shims to hold the coins in place. Think of a very narrow strip edge on and curved to reduce the size of the hole such that the coin will not turn.

If you look at my photos of my 7070, you can see the shims on the Draped Bust, Classic Head and 1st Coronet large cents along the bottom of the coin.

I do not have this problem with my 8140; however, it is around thirty years old (last dated hole is 1994).

I do have the same problem with the 7070, as explained above, and for the same reasons.

I've had the exact same issue, same hole many pages. I messaged Dansco and they ignored me and my messages.

The following is what I sent them:

Quote:

I bought the 8140 album ( Washington quarters 1932-1998 with proofs) and Have had issues with the quality of the first 7 pages where hole number 7 (second row, 3rd hole from the left) is far too large to properly hole the quarter for that spot. they rotate and rattle around possibly causing wear on the coins in these locations.
I was wondering if anybody else has encountered this problem.

I have done the same (but different) thing - I used black thread and laced it in around the quarters.

It's sad you pay a premium price for such an obvious defective product otherwise renowned for their quality Albums. I have another problem stemming for this recent purchase. I have to leave ebay feedback for the vendor. This item was new and wrapped. I don't know if they were aware of the problem, but I do not feel I can give them negative review. Although at minimum, I do believe it is best to send a message to inform them that this product is defective. What do you think of feedback? I also see Dansco is up and running again and feel they need to rectify this problem. What do you all think? Also, I am researching solutions to shim the coins in the meantime.

Because it is a manufacture defect, I would not penalize the retailer ( ebay in this case). Yes, informing them of this and getting the word out could help. We need Dansco to stand up and fix this.
Maybe if all of us start posting about this 'issue' maybe they would listen.

I went back and looked at the history, and I can see my first question about this from Jan 2023 but are held up with a "Your comment is awaiting moderation." status. So I just re posted my question again.

I agree with your opinion, and I will put a bug in their ear. The squeaky gear gets the grease. According to Danco they are concentrating on other albums.

A temporary solution to stop the rotation is to cut a narrow clear piece of plastic from safe 2x2 like a 1-inch-long sliver and gently guide it in one side of the gap while holding or nudging the coin with gloved hand to one side. Push down "wedge" into the curve of the hole so you can slide the clear album slides back into place. This may take some trial and error, but it seems to keep the coin stationary once slide is closed. Because the wedge is clear it is hardly noticeable. The curve of the wedge acts springlike against the quarter. Hope this helps.
I still need to contact Dansco.

I merged this into the existing topic to help others down the road.

I am glad you found a fix while waiting to hear back from Dansco.
