Hello, I'm new to this site but I was wondering if anyone could answer my question. On the newer Presidential dollar coins, if you were to stack them all face up and look at the edge lettering should they all be facing the same way...should it be right side up, up side down, or does it matter? I brought this up to my local coin shop operator and he didn't have an answer but said he would look into it for me. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks for the clarification...I didn't think too much of it as it seems to be pretty common with the ones that I do have. Also, thanks for the welcome.

Yeah that part is done in a separate process I think! Now if it did not have any edge lettering $$$$

TheBrandonian, I too would like to welcome you to this forum, as far as I know I would think there would be some form of consistency to this Incused lettering. I am not sure, however I know if you have the lettering both ways on the same coin, this too is worth a premium, good luck, Mike

Hi and welcome:-)

The coins enter the edge lettering machine randomly. The lettering is applied either way. In theory, there is a fifty/fifty distribution of "right side up" and "upside down" ones. One is no more rare or common than the other.

On proof versions of the coin, there is a three piece collar used to strike the edge lettering rather than the Schuler edge lettering machine used for circulation strikes.

The lettering on a proof coin is supposed to be "right side up" in relation to the obverse.

Thanks,
Bill
