My impression is that the coin is authentic, but the mint mark was added.
The wood grain texture of the metal is difficult to fake, but that shadowy indentation all around the MM looks too much like a later addition from a hand held punch rather than from the original die.

I agree that it's an added mintmark. The size and color of the S are spot on, but the surrounding indentation is suspicious, and the S doesn't have the central thickness of a genuine mintmark (lower photo).

The positon of the MM alone relative to the denticles below is enought to discredit this coin.

Agreed, looks like a genuine 1909 Phili with an added mintmark. Looks like material was removed from the fields, leaving an S. While it appears "raised", the highest points of the S will be flush with the surface of the fields surrounding the engraved area.
I wonder if whomever created this intentionally chose a woody. Does make it a bit more difficult to see the alteration at first glance to the unknowing.

with the frog, mm should be centered above a denticle.

Very well done added mint mark and definitely could fool somebody. However the S is a bit too low, too vertical, and too small. The alignment with the denticles is almost spot on though. Somebody put a lot of work and skill into it.

Don't think that is original woodgrain. The surfaces are very rough, like it was hit with a wire brush with the bristles going horizontally. That is why the details look mushy. All this in attempt to make the added mintmark blend in.

Looks like the mintmark was made using copper from the actual surface. Note the voids around the mm.
