It was never a thought prior to today, but apparently an emory disc can grade MS64. Enjoy!

Assisted mint error? Assisted mint errors are not errors IMHO.

This exact coin in the PCGS slab was sold on Heritage for $2,280 on March 20th of this year.

ebay seller asking $6,917.86, a tidy profit.

I also found it here for sale https://planetbanknote.com/1986-sil...-super-rare/ for $3,750.

I'm speculating an emory disk is a sanding or polishing disk.

Amazing that a foreign object of precisely the correct size made its way between the dies for a perfectly centered strike. Evidently miracles do happen.

Couple things come to mind, Most grading companies will grade Mo$t Anything, When the Buck is involved, Also I Never Knew this Existed, !!!

The Auction states, " Less than 20 Known to Exist! " , A Rarity !!! Man Made Errors made at the Mint, by the Employees by Error, Are Errors. People pay Dearly for them.

Man made Errors, made at the Mint, By Employees, On Purpose, are NOT real Errors, People pay Dearly for them Too...IMO..... When the U S Mint produced the 1955 Lincoln Cent, Double Die Cents, They say the Cents went to the North East , the Cents were packaged with Cigarettes as Change, the Manufacturers Figured they would " anticipate " the Change given, back when they cost about 12 Cents, Put Three Cents in the Packages, along with the Product, Cigarettes in the Vending Machines..... Imagine the Instant Coin Collectors, That Coin Made, I Know ONE !!!!

Here is the info:
No-Date American silver eagle struck on a 3M emory disc, and with a normally struck reveres but with a uniface obverse. The obverse is uniface due to having been struck underneath an American Silver Eagle planchet.

Why was emory paper in the mint in the first place? These emory discs were used at the Mint in treating the dies, which had a problem in 1986 and 1987 with planchets sticking to them. 3M emory discs were used to treat the die surfaces, and were struck between a planchet and the obverse die, and then the same was done to the reverse die, and in doing this process the problem with the planchets sticking to the dies was resolved. Apparently in 1987 the problem was resolved, which is why struck emory discs are only known for 1986 and 1987 dated American Silver Eagles.

The emory discs were supposed to be destroyed, but a number of them made it out of the Mint. Although no one knows for sure, there appears to be a population of 50-100 of these in existence, with most of them hoarded away in collections. For an incredibly popular coin series, that is a tiny population, and is a 2-year only issue (1986 and 1987.)

It was incredible that both pieces of this mated pair were released together and still survived.

I don't believe in coincidence.
