What's up with this coin? Looks like it's got scrapes on it doesn't it?

Looks like an altered coin that's been put in an authentic slab. The seller is reputable so I really don't know what to think.

Interesting. The Cert checks out, and the seller has a bunch of high-dollar stuff in reputable slabs. The coin's details look right, but the fields sure don't.

I thin some of the foam around the coin became lose and fell towards the center of it. Then it maybe it melted from heat, age, or just being pressed up against the holder?

Since when has PCGS ever use cheap looking foam inserts in their slabs? SampleSlabs does not have that style of holder listed either

I think they only used it for a few months. I remember reading that off of the pcgs forums a long time ago.

I love how you spend 26000.00 on a coin and they still have the nads to Charge you 25.00 for shipping. WOW.

The diagnostics for a genuine 1856 look OK: the 5 in the date appears correctly-shaped, the interior of "O" in OF is slightly rectangular (as it should be), and the A and M of AMERICA are slightly separated. The right edge of the "ball" of the 5 in the date should have a flat section but the photos don't show enough detail to be sure.
The white stuff might be deteriorated foam from the insert. If I were seriously interested in buying this coin I would insist on sending it back to PCGS for reholdering. I would also want a guarantee from the seller that it would slab at or above the original MS63 grade. At this price level I would not be willing to gamble.

PCGS ran out of cent sized holders and substituted nickels size holders but had to make up some foam shims so they wouldn't rattle around. They did that VERY briefly and this is only the fifth example I have ever seen.

Looks like a good candidate for that CAC service.

I was just going to buy that coin when I noticed the $25 dollars for shipping and handling. To much for me.

$25 is too much for a $26K coin? Registered, which would be the only way to send it with insurance, costs $43.30 (You can't insure mail for more than $5K except for Registered. And even $5K of insurance for any other mail type would run $58.75)
