Hi again,
I am in the process of parting company with this penny, so thought I'd just show it here before it goes.
The planchet flaw has flaked off completely and then stamped with the IA and KG pressed into the recess.
edit: oh yeah, the underlying issue with the alloy mix is evident on the obverse side running vertically up from ATIA

Nothing more to add, just thought it was worth a share.

Looks like a peeled lamination, very nice!

Appealing lamination issue (appealing, not 'a peeling'...).

I think its been struck through through something, rather than a lamination error.

hmmm, it's a thought, but then wouldn't the IA and the KG be hidden by the offending object? It would have been of substantial thickness to cause the depression.

pre strike detached lamination.
The strong impression of the last 'A' of AUSTRALIA suggests this.

I would think much scarcer than post strike detached laminations.

Could the flaw have been on the planchet before striking?
Seems you beat me to it Sel.

Note the bottom of the flaw which is a straight line.
I've never seen a straight line on a planchet flaw.
More likely its been struck through a piece of material/cardboard or similar.

Yes it is most unusual.
However, the planchet flaw is still evident at the upper end, tapering off to jagged points, between the IA and top left of the I.
I'm thinking the peel was manually lifted off and it has broken off in a straight line, back in the day.
And agreed I've never seen a straight line like that before.
