When coins get that worn. diagnosing strike anomalies is difficult. Maybe your coin was scratched by a machine almost a century ago, and that damage later smoothed by wear.

A Lot of the mid 20's S mint Buffalos have worn dies that caused flat mushy strikes. 1923 and 1925 in particular.

I'm looking at the line behind five cents that curves all the way around and connects with the hind leg. I don't believe it's a scratch of any kind because it goes behind the lettering of the word five without causing any damage to those letters and it connects with the back leg

It actually starts right in front of the buffalo's head and curves all the way around and connects with the hind leg

I would like to say that It is part of the rim that didn't wear all the way down yet, but hard to say. the field was struck pretty deep in that area.
