Hi, newbie to this hobby looking for some advice. I read somewhere that a Morgan should weigh 26.73 grams uncirculated. How much weight variance would you expect from a nice BU example. I have a BU 1879 S that weighs 26.77 grams so it's a bit heavier. Is this within an acceptable range? Just wanting to make sure it's not a fake.

That weight is perfectly fine and your coin is, too. A pretty mint state Morgan. The 1879-S is usually found with nice strike and luster.

The Mint tolerance range for the Morgan dollar was +/- .097 grams. So that gave an allowed weight range of 26.633 to 26.872 grams.

From what I've read, fakes are generally lighter in weight. Also, although some dislike pinging, this test can provide further assurance regarding the validity of a silver coin.

Good luck in your hunt.

Although I am a fan of comparative ping tone testing against known genuine, (done safely),
I doubt the pitch tone differences between two Genuine Morgans, one at the top of the Weight Tolerance range, and the other at the bottom of the range,
would have a perceptible audible difference.

Such a test is much more applicable for suspected fakes with questioned alloys, or manufacturing methods other than die struck.
