I was at the TNA show on opening day Friday, waiting in the line as they were first allowing people through the doors. I was with my two good friends, not coin collectors, but buddies from school that were curious about the coin business. Going into the show, I was without a specific goal. I simply wanted to buy all the deals available and possibly add a bust half to my collection. I was pleasantly surprised how many bust halves were in stock at the show overall. Countless raw halves, ranging in grades from Good to BU. I checked most of them for rare die marriages by memory, edge lettering errors, dentil tracks, and anything that would make a coin unique and worth buying at a higher retail price. Passing through the tables without buying a single bust half, I found a dealer who had all raw coins, including a case of nicer grade Capped Bust half dollars. Right away, I knew I was going to be there for a while, so I set my backpack down, straightened my tie, and sat down in the chair directly in front of the case. After sifting through a handful of choice halves, I set aside two coins to make a deal on. The first was an 1818 O-107 in mid AU dipped that had bright surfaces, a slight obverse retone, and an overlooked feature that I had briefly noticed. The second was an 1826 in AU-50 that had jaw-dropping surfaces and beautiful colors. I asked what he could do for the pair, and he named a 4 figure price, cutting $20 off the sticker price. Knowing that was too much, I set aside the lovely 1826, and asked if he could knock $20 off the sticker price of the 1818. He agreed, I paid him his dues, and was the proud owner of this coin. What the seller did not observe was the 1818 had doubled edge lettering, crystal clear as day! Me, a sucker for early mint errors, could not pass up the deal, even if I paid a little more than I should have. For all the serious bust half collectors out there, always check the third side of the coin! This particular example also has crisp clashmarks, from Ear Bars to the ERTY clash underneath the eagle's right wing! Suffering from bust half fever. Intriguing Castaingination error.
I admit, all the coins I bought at the TNA would have been covered, and then some, by the discount you got. I spent more on parking than on coins.

Nice find. Congrats!
Haven't been to a TNA show since they abandoned Ft Worth many years ago. Not a big fan of Arlington. little to no mass transit, high parking rates for events and constant road construction. Maybe someday but for the foreseeable future "thanks, but no thanks".

Wonderful die clash but I would have missed the edge lettering doubling as well. Great find.

Very nice coin! I love the doubled edge lettering and the nice sharp Die Clash. I did a Clash Overlay to help me understand just what the clash impact did to the dies. It shows that they were misaligned by about 5% to the K:4 position at the time of the clash. Click on the picture for a larger image

Really like this coin. This is what makes the early mint products so much fun to pursue!

What an awesome coin! It pays to be patient.
I was at the show on Friday and Sunday (as a seller, not a buyer) but still took time to look at quite a few tables.
Parking was reasonable IMO ($10 all day with re-entry, and not a far walk to the center.) There was a bit of construction on one bridge Friday, but gone by Sunday, so traffic was not a concern.
I agree about the mass transit issue but it's been a bone of contention for many years now. The proposed linkups with the Tarrant Light Rail system never really happened, except for the Bell Helicopter access in far north Arlington, but it's mainly used by plant employees. Arlington is one of the largest cities in Texas (and maybe in the US) without any form of mass transit system (light rail or bus service.) While this does not affect me personally, it is something that many other citizens have been wishing to have for a long time.

Very cool post! Not trying to hi-Jack the post, but I wondered if anyone has seen the highlighted areas on a genuine capped bust half? It is common to several counterfeits I have seen. Thanks!
