So. Quite possibly an uninformed question.. but are proof containers easily opened and reclosed without breaking? I'm looking at a 1982 set I picked up. And while the coins look untouched... I think I put this in the appropriate forum. Sorry admins if it's not

No, you'll break it before it ever comes close to opening. Done it.

So the quarter rotated is a normal thing?

Yes, sometimes not put in straight, sometimes move. Maybe someone can post examples.

But yes, coins can rotate in the lenses during packaging, transit and other handling (especially over 41 years). Those coins are pretty hazy. Not sure if that's common for 1982 proof sets or if that is a result of improper storage.

I will add that the Prestige sets (which use the same lens, just inserted into a fancier frame) have always been easy to open.

I remember I do have one example. I did that fantasy 2015 LESPS, and have the 2015 silver proof set remnants left. The Presidential dollars I never had to do anything with, but I did need the 2015 silver dime and Kennedy half. I had to use the silver quarters, and I know I ended up really wrecking that slab. I have pics I just took of the slab with the dime and half. On the edge, you can see the damage on the edge. It's not readily apparent, but there. I just had to get the one edge popped, then I could take out the plastic sheet the coins are pressed in to. I'd say no chance with this type of OGP that the coins will rotate. I'm not sure if the older proof sets would be like this or not.

No, the case should be glued closed and not openable. The set came in a black cardboard open-ended box, The jewel case is slid into a black plastic frame, then the case itself glued and supposed to be air tight. Mine is shut tight and cannot be opened without breaking it open - look to see several coins that have rotated some.

As I said, all my lenses since ~1999 popped open relatively easily. I do use a utility blade in the seam to get it started though.

All the ones I opened appeared that way to me.They were definitely not air tight. Yes, you will crack (or even destroy) the plastic when you open these. I need to get my old OGP out of storage some day to see how badly damaged they are compared to the recent lenses that are not sealed.

The slab I have pictured, with the dime and half removed, I twisted by hand until the tabs broke loose, your can see the missing, broken piece on the edge. The quarter slab I've since thrown out. It just wouldn't give way like the pictured slab and I had to use a couple pairs of pliers to get it to break. So it was junk. To continue the fantasy set story, I had to get the 2015 quarters removed from this silver set, then remove the quarters from the USM capsules, then get the 2015 silver quarters in the USM capsules. Otherwise the set wasn't going to look correct. The 2016 silver quarters I got in some aftermarket capsules, used the same type I use with any ASEs I have that need capsules, like my bullion set.
