Got this one from E & V in a deal we did a little while ago. He just up and put this one in as a bonus! Thanks!
A quick look and I knew there was a bit more going on than a standard
Struck Through Grease coin, and finally got a chance to review it properly and so here it is.
Both the obverse and reverse are struck through significant grease. On the obverse, you can see the outline of an incuse memorial, which in this case represents a "greasy ghost." Essentially over the course of time when the die is grease covered, the grease migrates to areas where the opposite die has large incuse areas, here the memorial design. So that extra grease ends up putting an incuse, miorrored, ghost-like image on the coin.
And while both sides show it, the reverse is a good example of grease-mediated radial smear. This is really too complicated a process to quickly explain, but you can read about it here:
https://www.error-ref.com/grease-me...%20elements.Overall, the effect is that the design smears towards the rim similar to a broadstruck coin. Best place to see the effect is on the R of AMERICA, where the top of the R is pretty much lost in the rim with the whole letter elongated and the interior of the R an oval.
