Maybe John Feigenbaum made a mistake I've never heard of an AU58 hard pack GSA Morgan.

Well, I see your point, NumismaticsFTW; that's quite a discrepancy. Typically, when I go to the "Greysheets" link I find the grade I want to research and click on it. That brings up auction results going back years. Shows the "sold" price and many have pictures. I then go into the pictures and compare the coin I'm looking at with the slabbed coins of that grade sold at auction. I think the "sold" coins reflect the real market value. Out of curiosity I just went to the NGC site for pricing. They're high as well, but not as much as the Greysheets link.

All Black Box GSA Morgans were indeed described as being Uncirculated. This is absolutely correct. However, the GSA employees who were handling the affair were not professional numismatists. The coins with obvious circulation ended up in the GSA soft packs. The coins that were considered "flawed Uncirculated" ended up in black box holders with small insert cards. By modern grading standards, at least a few of these coins would probably be AU55-AU58 "sliders." These were coins that had "tarnish" (toning), "excessive marks", etc. The coins that were considered "Uncirculated" ended up in Uncirculated black box holders with large insert cards. For the CC's, most of them were MS62-MS64 by modern standards, with PL and DMPL to be found as well. In an odd situation related to how the bidding tiers worked, quite a few Uncirculated coins ended up in soft pack holders as well, some of which are listed in NumismaticsFTW's photo above. Common-date GSA black box CC Morgans (1882, 1883, 1884) with original box and correct COA, in the MS63-MS64 range but not graded by a TPG, have been selling retail around $350-$375 for awhile now, perhaps a bit more for solid coins. Obviously, this doesn't apply to coins with pretty toning or PL surfaces. 6 or 7 years ago I bought 8 1883 CC and 1884 CC GSA's in OGP that were all around MS63, paid about $200-$225 per coin, so they have definitely gone up in value since then. I also bought an 1882 CC GSA OGP for $240. I kept the nicest 1884 and the 1882 and sold the others. My professional opinion is that the price OP paid was fair and reasonable given the quality of the coin.

Well, when you guys are right, you're right and I'm the first to admit it. The coin arrived and it was indeed a dog. Obverse damage concealed by poor photos. Seller has agreed to a refund. Lesson learned.

Yeah the grade being low unc was pretty obvious, not 63 or 64.
Ask us next time so you don't have to hassle with return.

Frankly, I think I'll stay away from Morgans online since the pictures can be so deceptive. If I see one that lights the fire for me, though, I'll post it first for evaluation. Thanks.

Your coin has two things going for it. It has a good strike and it has good luster. After that things are not too good but I still think it's a solid MS62 and a typical GSA CC Morgan.
Don't get too down about this one. I've bought worse. A lot worse. :(

I actually sent this one back. I think I'll hold off and maybe pay a bit more for a better coin in the future. I'm not a Morgan hunter, but the CC coins are appealing to me because of the history. I'm chalking this one up to my coin education!

this should be good example when purchasing by photo when they are not sharp, lit properly and not oriented. those photos were definitely presented to deceive. whomever the seller was I would scratch them off the buy from list
i cant get this one past MS61
