So if one had the bread and wanted to purchase an 1894-S Barber dime, how would one go about it?

Would you figure out how to contact the current owners and make them an offer? Or are these coins only for sale when they hit the auction block?

If you have the money, then you can link up with a major firm to keep track and bid for you the next time one comes up.

Seems like a lot of these lofty coins get brokered by a major dealer or auction house in a private sale.

Interesting question - you can apply it to any of the major rarities.

Many years ago I worked at a busy profitable restaurant, and there were rumors among the employees that the establishment was for sale. I had the opportunity to direct the question of pending sale to the owner, and he replied......Young Man, Everything is for Sale if the Price is Right. 12 Months later, the establishment was sold. My advice FWIW, find an owner of these fine numismatic treasures, and just ask. What the piece is worth is the price that someone will pay for it. Good Luck, seriously.

Sound advice. Worst they can do is say no.

I would settle for whatever condition I could afford, which for me right now would be in the $100 to $200 range.
