Hi. I know it's a 2-year old topic, but I also found this exact same error - a 1998-P with the same amount of die rotation - about 140 degrees, give or take 5 degrees. I found my specimen in the first box of nickels from a bank that I ever bothered to search back in 2018. I sent my specimen off to ANACS and got it certified just because it was going into my permanent collection.

I'm told that the value of mine is likely $25 or so, despite it being a major die rotation where the die rotated about 75% of the way to being a full 180 degree turnaround. However, mine is an AU50 Details grade as it appears to have been "cleaned" (more likely just environmental damage in circulation IMHO) as who the heck bothers to clean 1998 Jefferson nickels - lol. If it were mint state, a $150 - $200 value is the estimate, I'm told.

Anyway, here are the pics of mine. I think both coins came off the same press at about the same time. There is also an MS64 graded piece with a die rotation of unknown extent listed in the population reports on the ANACS website.

Whoops! Your's is a 1999. My aging eyes thought 1998 for some bizarre reason.

Oh well......forget my previous comparisons of the two coins....but they were both great finds from circulation.

@conf, this is a good example of why best practice is to avoid reanimating an old thread. I've split off your reply to its own thread, but here is a link to the old one for reference:

Interesting that the 'slabbed' '98 was found to be cleaned. A cleaned '98--fascinating.

Excellent find, ConfederateHalf! One would figure that after minting coins for close to 250 years, the Mint would figure out how make dies such that rotations were impossible. I figured it out in 5 minutes.

Nice find. , According to lincent cent resource, The U.S. Mint allows for an error margin of less than 8 degrees. Rotated die errors are usually not collectible unless they are at least 15 degrees. Rotated die errors are most valuable after 90 degrees with 180 degrees being the most valuable. https://lincolncentresource.com/Err...tedDies.html

That is why the site rotateddies that John1 posted mainly is listing known 90 degree plus examples. I will add that the less valuable errors still may sell just fine for small premiums such as on ebay, just may not appeal to serious collectors and dealers. We see them here as well, such as the maryland 2000-d quarter and I had kept a few bags of those since they might be in there along with possibly some missing clad layers I will look through in the near future once things settle down. Currently I see minor errors are selling as well that are typically so common we used to say they have 'no value' which is interesting.

I think you can get like 75 to 150 for that its been graded and its a nice rotation plus someone trying build a rotation error collection will pay more than 25 dollars just my opinion I look at hundreds of coins a week for a while now and I seen somewhere rotation errors start at 9 dollars up to 600 dollars lots of room so yeah 50 to a hundred maybe is right for sale now
