I found this dime in some pocket change. On the back there are three different levels. The outside ring is the thickest and the center ring the thinnest.( I say rings but they are definitely not perfect circles) You can even feel the difference. The letters and designs seem to run from one to the next without being deformed. It doesn't look like it has been smashed or anything. Anyone know if this is an error and if it is what kind. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

to CCF,i am sure you will like it here a lot and learn a lot as well,we all do.Your dime looks to me to have some very nice die cracks on the obverse and the reverse looks like it has glue on it maybe . Lets wait for some of the pros to answer.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

It looks like just scratches (damage) on the obverse.
They seem to be incuse (in or below the coins surface)
A die crack would show as a raised area on the coins surface devices/fields. Some kind of resin/epoxy/adhesive is on the coins reverse. This would not be recommended for any coin of value, but with this particular one try soaking it in some solvent. The area in question will raise off after a while. It might even come off with your fingernail if you pick at it.

A big huge scratch on the obverse that's all/I would say the reverse was tampered with some substance to give that appearance. I would even say the obverse scratch was done intentionally too

Hmmmmm. Interesting. Definite post mint damage. The reverse looks like someone coated the center with something (paint-cooler coating and dipped painted the reverse with acid. Then removed the pain and put another coat smaller on the center are and painted acid a second time making the center higher when the paint-coating was removed and the two areas lower where the acid was applied. Just a suggestion of what I see.

Thanks for everyones input. I really wasn't sure what to think of it. I tried some light cleaning and nothing came off. I also tried to get a better picture. I took a better look under a magnifying glass and it appears that there are raised lines of metal and that is what made it look like different thicknesses.
