OK, folks, these are real doozies here. I'm posting them with their own individual post but first, the back story... I was helping my mom clear out the apartment owned by her friend who recently past. Too much to list, but I now have about $20k just in melt value compromised of buffaloes, pre-1940 Qs, Morgan dollars & dimes, and this is just a fraction of what she had that is now in my possession. However, of the 20lb in wheat pennies stored in wooden chests, she had 3 pennies isolated, in their own individual protective case and this is one of them...what the heck is this thing?!?!

It appears to be a badly road rashed Lincoln Cent, but lets put that aside for the moment. Can you post up dimensions and weight of this object please?

the peeled part, if that's what it is, is unusual

Quote: the peeled part, if that's what it is, is unusual Indeed, it sure is. Another question to ask is how thick is it?

Post-strike damage of a rather vicious nature.

It's almost like one of those ratty ancients that people post asking for identification. Even knowing this was a Lincoln it took me a minute to Rorschach the profile on the obverse. The rounded lump on the reverse must have been from a parallel dig which folded over part of the rim and edge.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Weird this coin does have an appearance similar to a copper coin that's been buried for a very long time.. Road rash wouldn't explain the big crescent shaped object.

to the CCF However that coin arrived at its present state - it did not leave the mint that way. It's simply a damaged coin.

It almost looks like something baked on top of the penny, hence the finer edge of the bottom where the *stuff* is peeled up. Sorry to hear about your mom's friend.

What I don't understand is why she isolated that one when there is bound to be one much more valuable in the other 20 pounds of wheat cents?
