Hey Everyone!
I picked up this coin in an error lot of coins recently. I find it particularly interesting. It appears the coin is a split planchet on both the obverse and reverse occurring before the strike.

The coin weighs 2.96 grams. It has the classic striations of a split planchet. What I find somewhat odd is how strong the design elements still are since split planchets normally lead to design weakness. My guess is that the peels were so thin, only accounting for a loss of .14 grams of material, that it didn't impact the strike. That and/or it happened to be a particularly strong strike.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

CRHunting, that's way cool! Were it mine, I'd be tempted to hold it at 12K and 6K and give it a little tug to see if it would come apart.

Exactly what I was thinking. Too bad about the gashes on Abe's eye, but still a really neat coin.

Yeah definitely a bit of a bummer that it's a details coin because of the damage on the face. That said, it's still a super interesting coin. I sometimes buy coin lots to split up and sell individually to make extra money to fund purchasing other coins on my bucket list. This coin, however, is going straight into my personal collection. :-)

This is the best split planchet I've seen. To me the error outweighs the damage.
