A short post to warn about three type of counterfeits I have encountered online. They all look nickel plated and have no numismatic value at all.

Most probably die struck.
In most of these sorts of cases the dies are made from impressions of existing coins, and the dies subsequently hardened before anywhere between a few hundred to few thousand copies are struck from them.

detection:
Even if the metal for the copies came from re cycled genuine coins,
the copies are at least 2nd generation from the original coins, and so,
in at least a few locations on the copies, the detail is less distinct, often to the point of appearing somewhat 'mushy'.

I don't, but I have seen people fooled by these pieces. They usually sale at a 30-50% discount compare to real ones.

Those are garbage, easily identified as fake.

They look terrible honestly but I feel bad for people who don't have experience to know what to look for.

The first one is hideous, especially the reverse. The next two I can see where they would fool someone inexperienced.

I'm with Dearborn about the weight.

I intentionally bought some counterfeit Peace $1 w/clashes and "CC" Morgans for 5$ that looked decent in hand but were only about 19 grams.
A friend told me he thought they were made from magnesium.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

There are new fakes with 90% silver. Using only the weight of a coin as an indicator to tell if it is fake or not will be hard in the future.

These aren't new they have been around for a while. But these are so obvious that if you can't tell these are fake you shouldn't be buying coins on ebay.

Agree, but it surprised me that there are still people who ask if these pieces are real or not on the forum. I thought making a post might warn them if they encounter a similar piece in the future.

It's a noble effort, BUT there are thousands of threads about parking lot coin finds that are just that road rashed coins that people keep on posting as errors.

The average person isn't into coins for the history of artistry, they are in it for the profit margin (I found this error and it's worth billions). People on ebay play off that.

Here is an "American Silver Eagle" that I found in my fathers collection. I know nothing about coins and want to sell it fast and cheap. First $15 takes it.

The greedy think it's a super deal jump on a fake coin , try to sell it and told its fake. It's the same in that everyone thinks they found a copper 1943 or steel 1944, greed takes over from common sense.
