So. I snagged an 1818 thinking I hadnt gotten one yet. Should have looked on my list. I did indeed have one. A rather nice N-10 variety. She is the first two pics.

So, I got the second one yesterday. Not sure what her variety may or may not be. She is a lower grade, but still nice. I took her pics in the insert for the slab so you could clearly see the rotated revers.

So what say you folks? I'm keeping her just based on that rotation, but variety maybe?

Sorry I can't comment on any variety - just not my area.
However I think I like your newest one best! The rotation is cool and it doesn't have the corrosion and rim bump like the first one.
Just one guys opinion :)
I wonder what others think and would like to hear about any variety designation.

I have been known to do the exact same thing from time to time. But in your case, it would appear to be a very nice upgrade.

The variety is N-1 R-2+. Easy to identify, all of the 1818 cents have the leaf point past the right edge of the second S in STATES except N-1 and N-7. On N-1 the point of the leaf is past the center of the first A in America, on N-7 it is below the left serif of the left base of the A.

So now you have the first and the last varieties for the year, you need to fill in those between them. (Not difficult except for N-4.)

Just a note on the rotation. Within 15 degrees is considered within tolerance, so that <is> an error. But, they don't really become collectible on the large cents until they are rotated at least 90 degrees (The rotated die census only counts ones that are rotated at least 90 degrees as well). But, still neat here.

New one does appear to be an upgrade. Color or perhaps it's the photo, more pleasing to the eye and condition is better.

Congrats

So it's an upgrade, they're different varieties, that give you an excuse to keep both of them.

As John Wright once said, "I've got that date, I've got that variety, I've got that die stage.......I don't have a green one!"
