So I found this here penny and upon closer inspection I noticed that the top dye stamp is lifting off of the previous stamp. Are not pennies formed from a single layer of their metals. If so, how could one layer peel off of itself? Obviously it's a double dye but that doesn't explain it peeling off from itself. Hope pics are good enough.

It looks like Machine Doubling, not a doubled die. The size of the letters and digits is reduced. On a Doubled Die they would be wider or longer and the doubled area would be rounded, not flat and shelf-like. I can't see where the copper is lifting, but it sounds like it may be a lamination. The metal was mixed poorly and a layer can actually fall away from the coin, in some cases.

MD and/or DDDIt's not " no mint" otherwise it would not exist. No 1966 US coin has a mint mark, so there is no need to mention that either.

to the CCF Not a doubled die. That is a very good example of Machine Doubling. I would keep it for reference. Yoko, the op thinks it was "stamped" twice creating a double.

This would be MD that we are looking at - DDD will trend towards the rim as the die wears out.

This looks like a great example of MD and not a DDO.

Dearborn, I don't think that's a rule, I've seen many examples of DDD that do not trend toward the rim

Agreed - nice example of Machine Doubling. @OP - coins are minted using a die not a dye.

Thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge. I watched the Machine Doubling and hopefully have learned something. nickio, does that mean my 66 nickel with the PSD mint is a fake only kidding. Thank you for that information. cujohn and nickelsearcher, my bad, I will make an effort to use the proper terminology. I know it can become annoying. Anyway, again , thank you.
