So wandering around I came across this coin. Seems like a good EF coin (but I hate the fresh obverse rim scratches at 12 and 1), but as I look closer I can't figure the incused areas around the reverse leaves. I'm seeing some apparent doubling on "United," but it may be Machine Doubling. Does not explain the "trenches" around the leaves. Seller's pics. Educate me, please, and thanks.

Can't imagine why anyone would re-tool those areas. I grade this VF-30.

I can't either, but I can't explain them. Those areas would mean a raised ridge on the die surrounding those devices. I like the coin pretty well for the price, but those fresh obverse rim scratches are something I can't ignore, though. Hate to see that. Mishandled at some point in the recent past.

I don't see obvious signs of tooling but as stated, if you have something about the coin you don't like, no point in buying it.

i dont see tooling. looks like there might be some MD. obv looks XF45 reverse XF40. the rim marks imo are current. even though they are only on the rim, there is quite a few of them and TPG's tend to detail coins with current scratches. I think i'd pass
