Hello,

I have not posted in a while. I have been trying to catch up on my reading ( Coin World and Coin Values.) I did have a general question though. In your opinion does it make me a "bad collector" or a "trivial" collector because I'm not at all interested in coin collecting for investment or re-sale. If a coin looks good to me I'll buy it and proudly display it as part of my collection even if it is considered worthless on the market. I collect coins in hopes to establish a family heirloom for my kids, not so much for the monetary value but for for the sentimental value.

Does it make me a "bad collector" or a "trivial" collector because I'm only interested in modern coins from the 1950's through Today? I'm not really into the old 1800's coins of any kind I just pass the stories and articles in my magazines when I see them.

Does it make me a "bad collector" or a "trivial" collector because I have no interest in error or variety coins specifically? I mean I started a Sacagawea Set and all I'm looking for are coins that look good from the years 2000 to Date from both the Denver and Philadelphia mints. Beyond that errors and varieties don't appeal to me.

Any opinions or comments would be helpful.

Thanks,
Rich

Nope not at all. You are doing what you like. That's the fun of collecting...you can tailor it to your likes and dislikes, regardless of what others are doing.

For your question about buying only, there's no problem with that either.

Every individual has their own likes and dislikes. That's what hobbies are all about. No one here should judge you because you only collect moderns, and you shouldnt judge yourself either. :)

Hi Snitchard,

I don't think that has any bearing on whether you are as serious a collector as anyone else. And I don't believe you can be a bad collector (unless your sole hobby is to buy and then ruin everything you get) I am just now learning to budget as a single mom and before that I never sold a thing. I try not to, I definitely rarely buy with intent to resell, I don't hunt for errors and only buy a variety if it is well known and would complete a set or fill a hole in an album. I as well have a separate set of coins that will be my daughter's one day.
None of that makes me a "bad collector" or lessens the value of the last 20+ years I spent collecting.

You collect what you love, for the reasons that make you happy and fill that hole in your heart that has a only a place for coins.

I think you are a fine collector and that is my opinion. :)

No, that doesn't make you bad collector. Coin collecting should be fun...collect what you want, and collect it the way you want.

When I opened this thread, I thought you were going to confess that you found a $3,000 coin in the dealer's $9 bin.

Anyone who tells you that you are a "bad" or "trivial" collector is a pretentious a**. That's MY opinion!

A bad collector? No. It probably makes you one of the better collectors, a person that collects what they want for enjoyment.

No it doesn't. I am the same way. Take my Lincoln Cent collection for instance, I have about 2000 of them and just purchased 1000 more from one of our members. Will I get a 1909s VDB or a 1914D? probably not for I am 100% positive that they have been well searched. But I will put each and every one of them into a 2x2 fold over, as long as they are not a sidewalk penny, and cherish them just the same. I have never sold a single coin that I have acquired for my collection. The only bad collector is the, dare I say it, The uneducated or a milder way of putting it, Uninformed collector.

The only way that I can think of being a bad collector is someone who steals the stuff they collect. Otherwise, anything goes.

A wise man once said, "in life, you are what you eat". If you are a collector of modern coins, then that's what you are! If I drive a Chevrolet and not a Ford, does that make me a bad driver?
If I love apples and hate oranges, does that make me an unhealthy person? If I love Montreal Canadiens and hate the Boston Bruins, does that make me a bad hockey fan?
Opinions, likes and dislikes are like A _ _ H _ _ _'s. Everyone has one and nobody has the perfect one. So enjoy your passion, after all you only live once and ya can't take it with you!

(Emphasis is mine)

No, it makes you a smart one (even if Canadiens is misspelled)!

But seriously, to each their own. One of the greatest things about this hobby is that there are so many different things to collect and so many different ways to collect them!

I would advise NOT to get into coin collecting if it were just for the "money in it".......By "my" account, you've listed all of the RIGHT reasons to get into this hobby !.....collect what makes you happy !...

note *
You do want to try, through education, to be a "smart" collector though.....of course !....
Don't give somebody $50.00 for a $25.00 roll of 2009 Native American dollars that you could buy for yourself from the U.S. Mint !......NOW "THAT" WOULD BE A BAD COLLECTOR !......
