I was with a friend of mine the other day, we bought a couple of drinks at a convenience store. When he received his change there was a "funny" coin in it. When he looked it over it was an 1876 Seated Liberty quarter in at least F condition!! While I was congratulating his luck (he also collects) I was wondering if it would strain our friendship a little if I were to kick him in the shin, grab the coin and run off into the darkness...then it occurred to me that we rode there together in HIS car. Maybe I shouldn't kick him just now...

All kidding aside-this is the oldest coin I have ever seen come through circulation. All I can think of is somebody's dad is going to be really angry that his coin(s) are missing from his collection

Holy!! You better make sure it's genuine! Probably even worthwhile putting that in a magazine that coins over 100 years old still do circulate but who knows - probably a few cheap collectors will claim that it's theirs.

Woe--- Think I would have bounced like Tigger back in that store and asked to see all his quarters. Some kid may have been on a candy run and grabbed some of Dad's/Mom's coins to make the purchase.

I would have paid the cashier $5 to look at the rest of his till. It would have been better chances than a scratch off!

I have a friend that came to show me an 1876 Seated Liberty quarter from an upstate New York diner. It shows that really old coins can be found in circulation. My oldest was a 1917 plain mm buffalo!

Yeah, that is an incredible find. The only coin older that I've personally heard of from a member here is that they found a large cent in a coinstar reject machine. Thats an incredible find.

My oldest find from circulation is a 1910 wheatie. My rarest would be a 1911 liberty head nickel.

oldest was a 1909P lincon cent, my rarest is probably 1948-D half dollar, but that is without knowing foreign coin mintages

Incredible find!

I think your friendship is probably worth more than the quarter though.

My oldest find (actually from a coin roll) is a 1911 Barber dime and it is in my 7070.

Exactly what I was thinking. Actually if you read the papers or listen to the news you would notice a massive increase in home robberies lately. Many of those are coins. Criminals just spend them. I too would have run back and asked if I could buy all their change. Might have been a store where some criminal dumped an entire collection.

I found an 1892 Indian in a cent roll, a 1901 Liberty in a nickel roll, and a 1902-O Barber half in a bank roll. Those are my oldest. I would probably faint if I ever found a Seated Liberty!

By the way, anyone hear about the 1856 Quarter Eagle found in a bank roll of dimes in Vermont? It was reported in the 3/23/09 issue of Coin World. THAT is a find!

If you kicked him you could have gotten to coin AND his car! Two for one!
