I have received a large collection of asian / Chinese coins. I unfortunately have no knowledge of the coins. They were purchased from an estate in which the collector had owned a coin shop in the 1980's & 1990's. They had said he sold the majority of his collection before his passing. I will be posting quite a few more Chinese coins.

This coin was in a envelope marked "FU-Kien Y-377"

I was wondering about the authenticity of this coin as well as date / variety info & approx value. Majority of coins have been in brown paper envelopes for who knows how long.

I was able to test on my sigma metalytics machine and showed as silver. Diameter of the coin is 23.5mm.
Does not stick to a magnet.

@jak, from the pics, this one looks silver plated as the underlying copper seems to be poking through in several areas. I know you said this seems to be coming in as good silver, so is that just the lighting/toning that is so copper-like?

In hand it appears to be a heavy / crusty tone although I am not 100% certain on how it would look under the scope if it was plated. Appears to be ontop of the coin and you can see scratches on the toning that appear silver below.

Unfortunately my current photo set up wont allow me to take good shots using magnification. Not sure if these will be of any help in determining.

Ok yes those are really nice closeups. It still isn't clear to me though if that is copper colored toning on a silver coin or a copper core peaking out from underneath silver plating. I'm still in favor of you picking up a good balance and getting some specific gravity measurements on these.

The skepticism about scarcer Chinese coinage is in general ABSOLUTELY warranted... and advice about proper testing abities is good (he's got a SIGMA, so just assuming his scale broke or whatever... but specific gravity testing is a strong data point).

Magnets... eh. In 2023, with what's out there now in terms of GOOD fakes, if your knowledge/eye is SO undeveloped that we're going to magnets... give up and take up bowling as a hobby.

All that said, recognize this grouping for what it is - honest, old collection material with the skin to prove it!
