On this day August 9, 1852, Henry David Thoreau's "Walden; or, Life in the Woods" was published. "Walden" details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years living in a woodland cabin he built near Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Thanks, Hondo Boguss, but I think that was 1854. I couldn't find anything for August 9th 1852. I just thought that it would pass because it's a date.

Notes can be a birthdate or death date yes but also a general date which can be tied to a event, person, or anniversary etc you can look up as apparently hondo did. Most seem to prefer MMDDYYYY but people will of course buy whatever is similar like yours having the YYYY first. Obviously the more obscure it is the less people will desire it and the longer it may take to sell if ever. Those 1776 notes we mentioned a bit ago seem to sell to some collectors for example. Sometimes you just get lucky with a date that is important to some, see if you can find 09112001 on a uncirculated note.

The insignificance of this random fact cannot be understated.

A French gunsmith. While interesting info below I guess it would require that someone is mainly a collector of guns/gun memorabilia, vincent van gogh or even certain victims of gun violence perhaps and then extend that to currency, so like steve when you search out info like that perhaps its possible to make a sale where its typically meaningless, but its not a common high demand item to sell easily such as on ebay it seems and for most here probably even a spender.

It is thought likely that the gun with which the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh fatally shot himself in a field in 1890 was a 7 mm Lefaucheux pinfire revolver. The pistol was found, extremely corroded, in 1960 and is on display at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. A 7 mm Lefaucheux revolver, used by Paul Verlaine to shoot and wound Arthur Rimbaud in 1873, sold for €435,000 at a 2016 Paris auction.
