I found this penny in a box with tie pins/tacks. Don't know when I found it but it's in such bad shape I doubt it has any worth. Opinions?

Sorry for the poor photos but the camera had a hard time finding a good edge upon which to focus.

Mike, a major problem with steelies is that they rusted. It's not worth much, but still a cool coin to find mixed in with other items.

Yes in pretty rough condition, but would still be a keeper for me.

Even in mint state, these have little value.

For fun, I checked the sold/completed sale info on ebay for PCGS graded '43 steel cents--to get a sense for current value...

mike31093,

Kinda looks like a once buried coin, like a metal detector find. In that condition it only has sentimental value, IMHO.

Too bad, but you can replace it with a nice one for not too much.

Actually, if they came upon an unsuspecting clerk, an unscrupulous person might be able to get away with pretending it's a dime. Not advocating that, mind you!

I wonder what would happen if you fed a steelie into a CoinStar?

In theory, a Coinstar rejects steel cents.

Somebody will eventually come along and find it in the reject tray..

And Yes, while this coin is in bad shape (very bad) it is still identifiable as a Denver steel cent. 2x2 that guy and save it from further degradation.

TBH this cent looks way nicer than the reprocessed ones you see often. Those just look so artificial and obviously jacked.

I would not be terribly upset as it did not have any real numismatic value to begin with. Place it in a 2x2 and keep it from further damage.

Steel pennies are basically worthless anyway unless they're in high-MS territory.
