Found this at one of the local antique shops and was wondering if it was authentic and if it was worth buying? It is relatively cheap, like $5.00. It is basically melt if real, or an interesting curiosity if not. Thanks! I will probably get it tomorrow.

I am not an expert on these older coins, so I wanted at least a second opinion. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't a counterfeit, even if it was, I would still probably buy it. I will get it tomorrow! Thanks!

Good job, Khromtau! For $5 I would have grabbed it on first sight. Looking forward to your analysis of this "2 bits" half!

It's certainly a very curious half-half! We've all seen the cut-in-half love tokens, but this one seems to be a bit lopsided for such an item.

I will probably bring it to the local coin store next week to see what they say. I am going to hazard a guess (assuming it isn't a contemp. counterfeit) that it was split before it was struck, due to a lack of or very weak reeding that is overall about 180 degrees across from any part of the break (see first and 4th pic). Meaning that there is about a half inch of relatively noticeable reeding on the top and on the bottom of the coin from the edge of the break. It is also a very weak strike, which could have been caused by the metal flowing into the open void between the two dies, and not getting pushed up into the finer detail in the die. I can get more pictures tomorrow if needed. Thanks!

My guess is that it was intentionally damaged, not some unusual clipped planchet. If it came from the mint that way, it's hard to imagine how it could have circulated long enough to develop significant wear.

It's got to have a story behind it. Too bad we will never know.

It looks like a plated lead casting to me. The date looks awful.
