My mother in law has had this coin for a long time and asked if I'd sell it for her and she'd give me a percentage. I said "sold!" once she handed to me to look at. She was a little puzzled until I said I'll buy it. I said I want it for my collection and I'll buy it from you right now. She said... oh!... well in that case you can have it if you're keeping it. She also gave me an OBW $5 roll of 1964 D Washington quarters, a stack of walkers and 64 KHDs, a sack of wheat cents and a sack of Mercury dimes and Roosevelt dimes pre 1964 as well as an 1892 Morgan and 2 silver eagles. I found a 1909 VDB and a 1924 D VF condition in the Wheat cent bag. Here is the Double Eagles photos. Pretty nice condition as well! Stoked!! Always wanted one of these.

Nice gift! Did she have any idea of the value? If she could use the money you should give her a portion of the value.
Sounds like she handed you $3000 worth of coins and might not have known they were worth over $300. Anyway enjoy your windfall.

I told her what it was worth. She thought I was only interested in error and varieties and silver coins. Assuming no interest in gold coins.
As for my inlaws needing money.... pretty certain they are doing more than OK for sure.
It was just a round gold thingy in a bowl in her closet with other round thingys in bags in her closet. To me, it means a lot more than that.

The only things my mother in law ever gave me were disapproving looks.

That's a very nice mother-in-law! Made me think of my late mother-in-law; we shared a passion for coins, antiques and old artifacts, and she gave me many interesting things over the years because she knew I wouldn't just turn around and sell them but would treasure them myself!

Sweet pick-up! Will you keep it free or slab it?

Wow, and to think of all the bad things men have said about their mothers-in-laws over the years...

Any idea where she got the coins? It doesn't sound like she had any interest in it.
My mother-in-law did the same and gave me a bunch of commemorative Thailand coins and currency. Not much value but very interesting and beautiful coins. She has since passed away so they're a good memory and something for my kids in the future.

I've had a lot of stuff given to me, so I have no problem giving it away to my kids. Some of it was valuable, some of it was junk no one wanted. Lots of trips to the dump after my dad died.
However it didn't come from my mother-in-law. That is unusual.

@kppbll the 1914 D was given to her from my Wife's grandmother (who is still alive and well) and loves me to death. @spence I plan on keeping it encapsulated raw ungraded for now.
I have a great relationship with my entire family and extended family.
Growing up, all the girls I dated their parents always liked me. Same with friends parents.
I was taught to never give people a reason to distrust, the definition of integrity was always said. Money means nothing, others come before any amount of money and time is more valuable than anything on earth be wise how you spend it. Oh and my dad always said "Think Before you do things!" A lot!

As do I...I'm often saddened when I hear others talk disparaging about their family members. I'm blessed that I was raised in a loving family...and happy you were also! What a great Mother in law! smat
