Hi! I am RickyO from Argentina, and I am new to the forum and relatively new to collecting coins. I started collecting coins from my own country. Then, when I have had enough of them, I started collecting from neighbouring countries (Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia). And now I feel attracted to coins from Latin American countries, particularly the smaller ones on Central America like El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba, Dominican Republic, etc.

I know coin collecting is a hobby, and I can choose to collect whatever I want. I also like that looking for coins from different countries broadens my numismatic and general knowledge, and I really enjoy it. On the other hand, I feel my collection would be too dispersed and look rather chaotic. I would like to add that I collect only silver coins.

I would really like a piece of advice by more experienced collectors on what to do. Thank you!

Ricky, you could start a type collection from various countries - it seems that is what you are doing any. You have an entire lifetime to build your collection!

First, welcome to CCF. Second, yes what to collect is a very personal choice, but it is a fun subject to ponder. If you were interested in history, you might consider Spanish cobs as there were many mints in the New World. Or, you could collect more modern coins, but try to get one from every country in the Americas. A third idea would be to focus on a specific year that is important to you, such as your birth year and pick up coins from that year only. I'm sure you'll get many other ideas in this thread.

Thank you Hondo Boguss and Spence! I have decided (for now) to start a type collection of Latin American silver coins, particularly from the smaller countries. I may also start collecting coins struck in the year I was born. My girlfriend is Russian, and she gave me this year some Soviet change she had with my birthday year! Yay! Thank you both for your answers!

There are so many ways to collect. For me, I started type collecting. Then moved to sets. Then moved to dabble in foreign coins that I liked the looks of. You may find your interests and taste evolve over time and I find that most satisfying. Collect what you like. Eventually, you will probably grow to like the diversity and eclectic nature of your collection because they will bring memories from different times in your life.

Start collecting with local coins and keep collecting coins from neighboring countries. You have a unique opportunity to collect the colonial coins of your country. But I want to make a reservation that everything depends on your budget. There are many themes for collecting, but not all of them may suit you. . I like the direction you have chosen. Everyone loves silver, and I think you can easily add to your collection. I would also like to add that I would start with more modern coins. Let's say from the 20th century. They are well preserved, and the prices for such coins are not very high.

I put together a US colonial set a while back, needed a Spanish "Pieces Of Eight" to fill that slot and was astounded at the variety of countries and styles to pick from. In your case I would dig deep into the history of S. American coinage from the 1500s when hammered "cobs" emerged from all the freshly mined silver. Peru, Colombia, Bolivia .. I'd put together a sort of history of this early coinage leading up to the milled "pillar dollars" of the 1700s. Fascinating stuff, hope you will keep posted.
