I've been selling coins on ebay for six months now and have noticed that a disproportionately high percentage of purchasers are from Quebec, and the vast majority of those with francophone names. I've also noticed a surprisingly low percentage from Alberta and BC. Would those of you who have a good sense of the coin-collecting community in the country say that collecting is evenly weighted across the country or more prevalent in particular regions? And if more prevalent in certain regions, why that would be?

This should be interesting. We'll see if your findings get support. Definitely following this one.

It can be hard to find reliable statistics for coin collectors, since the hobby is by nature secretive. The RCM might be able to tell you the breakdown by province of its customer list, but that assumes " RCM buyer" and "coin collector" have a strong correlation. I can give you some statistics, based on the number of coin clubs in each province. Note that this also makes an assumption, that "number of coin clubs" correlates well with "number of coin club members" and "number of coin club members" also correlates well with "number of coin collectors". I'm also assuming the RCNA is aware of the existence of all coin clubs. So, here's the table: We see Quebec is actually the worst province, in terms of number of coin clubs per million population, and the Atlantics are the best (though the stats are skewed by their tiny populations). Ontario and BC are rated about the same. In short, these statistics do not correlate with your observations. Perhaps one could also correlate this with coin dealers per head of population; perhaps Quebeckers are over-represented in your sales list because there aren't as many other sources (local coin shops and coin shows) for people to buy coins from, thus forcing them to go onto ebay.

It may? be useful to look at Canadian Government statistical information relating to personal discretionary spending according to district divisions within each Province and Territory.

PEI made the list but Newfoundland didn't?

Interesting observations. I've wondered the same about the US--not only the spatial distribution of collectors, but also the geographic distribution of forum members across the planet.

Thanks for the insights! That chart is interesting. I would be curious to hear from any other online coin sellers whether they have noticed any disparities in where their coins are being purchased from.

Quote: PEI made the list but Newfoundland didn't? Sorry, but according to the RCNA, Newfoundland has zero coin clubs. As with the Territories.

I stopped using ebay as a source for new material about 5-6 years ago, because it was the same old unsold crap from months and months before. Coupled with either very poor or very misleading photography and/of text, it was not the time to continue to wade in. There's just too many dealers who would never make it in a brick and mortar store. The coin-sites that have active bases seem to be teeming with "experts" who think that the only coin worth selling has to be from a TPG. I think that most beginning and midstream collectors are shying away just because of the huge costs to grade unremarkable coins and from bad information. I miss the brick and mortar.

We sell relatively very little in Canada due to online taxation issues ( ebay & Government ). What we do sell in Canada .mostly Quebec , Ontario , Alberta . Virtually zero elsewhere . Laughable really. If we had to rely on Canadian sales ..out of business in very short order . 90 per cent of our sales are to the USA .

I'm in Pennsylvania but I have a collection of about 400 Canadian coins that I just transferred from Whitman folders into cardboard flips. I have no connection to Canada and have not even been there, but since childhood I have always liked Canadian coins.
