Wow, that is a gorgeous token! The face reminds me very much of Gandalf, although it is obviously not.

That is a GREAT Coins Mania, it's on my "to get" list for sure. Yeah, the first think I think when I see these is "Gandalf coin".

The denomination "Doppelthaler" isn't immediately obvious. You have to know that, after the German Union of 1871, the old "Vereinsthalers" of the various States were called in and exchanged for the new gold currency at a rate of 3 Marks for one thaler. The new system had 1, 2, and 5 Mark silver coins, but the thaler had been so popular for commemoratives that 3 Mark coins were ultimately added to the system of denominations, leading to a certain confusion. A "double thaler" had also been popular for commemoratives, and in new money that would be 6 Marks, although happily no regular coinage was ever struck in that denomination.
