Hi again!

I should have made my handle "please help" instead of " Cud"! Lol

Another question- what type and amount of light is used by a grader to inspect coins? I have all the lights on in the room (kitchen table is my new workshop) plus an led work light I am working under. Directly under. Like inches. At that distance with the loupe some coins look like train wrecks then I back outta the direct light path and they look like proof 70s. When I zoom in on example pics on website there seems to be the same drastic difference between some coins graded with the same grade and I suspect it's just to do with lighting.

I'm trying to get a batch to ship off for grading but I don't want to waste time and money sending in something I think is a 68 only to have the pros say nope its a 67! It seems like 67+ is the threshold for coins based on condition alone and not variety.

Thanks again,

Please help ;)

I would ask us first if your coins are even worth sending.

Sure that'd be great!

This is just a few of the nicest ones I have based on condition with one exception. All are what I believe to be at least 67 but probably 68s I'm trying to be conservative and not overestimate.

Lincolns:

59 bn
62d bn
62,64,67 rb
68d bn
68s rb
85 rd zinc small date
98 rd die crack

I forgot to say dimes are full bands and nickels full steps. And the 85z small date is probably a 68+

Lighting for grading comes down to personal preference and consistency. My go-to is a 60W halogen. 100W incandescent is a great choice as well. LED, natural sunlight, and fluorescent are terrible for grading.

If you would like me to find out the lighting used at NGC, PCGS, and CACG for grading, I can find that out for you.

If a coin looks like a train wreck, it's probably not the lighting, it's the coin. Clear focused pictures of one of these you think is 67 or 68 would help.

Suggest posting full, large and sharp pics of a coin you feel is one of your best. We'd love to see it. Thanks.

Here's a quarter I think is a good example cause they are the worst at reflecting light and a pretty decent penny. None of the flaws on either are visible with a naked eye and the quarter has incredible shine and luster and the penny too. Only when I put my readers on can I start to see scratches then I definitely see them with readers + the loupe. All I have to take pics with is a crappy cell camera and they aren't really that good but hopefully you can see what I mean by how lighting effects image.

Here's another example of a coin I have plus the link yo PCGS page with pic. In my opinion my coin is at least the same condition as the 67+ they have and I think probably closer to the 68s. The 68s have nicks and scratches all over them and I think it's just a lighting issue.

natural light will give the truest color, for eye safety be wary of bluish LEDs since long term viewing is known to lead to cataracts

So far I see nothing worth grading.

Developing your eye can take years.

Keep studying and ask us any further questions.
