Has anyone tried the PingCoin phone app. It works by analyzing the sound you get when you 'ping' a coin. Its database includes 9 gold coins and 24 silver and users can submit new coins. My hearing is bad so I'm hoping this app will help my buying expertise. I do not have a fake Morgan to use for comparison.

This app would augment several other testing methods: weight and dimensions. I can't afford the Sigma Metalytics device.

So...I'm looking for opinions about the practicality of the app. And perhaps others might find the app a useful tool. The only (obvious) drawback is that the coin cannot be 'shielded' inside a 2x2. The seller must be willing to remove it in order to ping the coin.

You can Google PingCoin to get some on-line info. But I think the app is only for Android phones.

Some folks go by the sound a coin makes when dropped or spun or tapped, but I think such activity can damage a coin, so I will not ping test any coins.

Agree. As cool as its sounds, I have no intention of pinging my coins--or those I come across in the future.

Coins will not be damaged when pinged, if done safely.

Rest the coin to be tested on the tip of a gloved finger over a blanket or towel, lest it falls.
Tap the edge of the coin to be tested with another coin, and compare the tone with a known genuine coin.

Simple.

Safe.
