Hello I am new to this, so please forgive me if my question sounds dumb. My daughter recently received a $50 bill from her aunt for her birthday. The borders looked odd. I'm uploading a picture to show what I mean. It appears to be misaligned on the paper. I have not yet checked this bill with a counterfeit pen as I was afraid if it is a misprint and more valuable than $50 I did not want to ruin it. I would appreciate any input that you all can provide.

Don't think there is a big premium for this, but if @steveintampa weighs in, you'll get a definitive answer.

Welcome to the forum.
We occasionally get this question and the simple answer is, it's a poorly centered note but still well within BEP tolerances. Ideally, all surrounding borders should be equal, but if you ever witnessed the speed these puppies are spit out, it would make your head spin.

Its great to ask. In this case what you are looking for is a major misalignment, .that is when one side appears normal in the borders and the other side is so misaligned that the design from an adjacent note is actually visible, or parts of the design are cut off/missing. That is when a misalignment can legitimately qualify as an error and even can be graded if worthwhile in value. In that case it can be worth a good amount. If both sides are off its a cutting error.

You can also look for a portion of the overprint like the seals or serials resting atop a portion of another part of the design it was not intended to cover.

In the case of your note as mentioned, it would be considered somewhat normal when its just a little bit off like that. I'll have to check again but If its just a minor misalignment, such as the whole design is still visible and just the border is very thin on one of more edges either vertically or horizontally and is pretty noticible more than what you are seeing, then I believe its only worth a couple dollars over face value on places like ebay from what I'm seeing. Its mainly as mentioned when you see the other note or parts are cut off where value and demand make it worthwhile.

Thank you all for the information. I have a small collection of"odd" looking coins that I've thrown in a drawer over the past couple decades. This has sparked my interest and I will be digging those out and researching if they are anything unique. Again I appreciate your willingness to provide insight to somebody that knows nothing about this.
