Saw this coin and really liked the dramatic die break. I've never seen one like this. Then I looked at the reverse and it looks like somebody aggressively cleaned it with some sort of abrasive. Had to pass, but hated to. Opinions?

Reverse doesn't look aggresively cleaned to me.

Looks like a lot of diagonal hairlines on reverse to me, especially around "United States." He also wants a pretty good price for it. Looks EF45 to me - he wants high AU money for it.

Rev definitely cleaned.

There is also some obverse rim damage (at around K9) not related to the die failure at K12. But, goodness, that's a massive die break, with field displacement, and you can see that the entire section has shifted at GOD W - look at the shift on the G! Wow!

This coin is AU53 details at best, but the value is in the massive die failure and the extensive date doubling / repunching especially on the 1. A collector of Shield nickels would probably snap it up despite the reverse, since many of the broken die varieties are both very scarce and very collectible. I'd buy this one in an instant if it was priced appropriately. I love massive die breaks / die failures / shattered dies, and the series is chock full of them.

Thick numbers scare me. Do you think this is a doubling ?
I think it may be a split of the matrix. A very beautiful mistake

Lots of good metrics cited here. However, one quantity which is too often neglected in modern American numismatic evaluations of value is "How much fun would it be to own this piece"? On a fun scale of 0-100, this would be north of 80 for me.

OK, I love the die break too, but the cleaning was putting me off. It is a really neat coin - Just made an offer on it. Guess we'll see. He's pretty proud of it.

A very cool die break, not worth close to high AU money. There is a lot of crazy 1868 nickels.

I'm pretty good with the deal I struck. Hard to imagine they got many more strikes out of this die. I'm picturing how badly that obverse die had to be broken and displaced to strike this coin. Like paralyse said earlier, this is just a neat coin with the RPD and the big die break. Went and looked at a ton of Shield die breaks (of which there are very many) before making an offer, and this one is one of the more extreme I found.

Coin arrived today. Obverse rim dings a little worse than I thought. Reverse cleaning not as bad as I thought - I had to work to get a decent picture of it. Those diagonal lines are pretty much parallel and don't seem to cross the devices - although the ball on the 5 is suspect. I'm thinking AU50/53.

Really like all that is going on with this coin. Shattered die, retained die, Cud, RPD. Makes up for the light abrasive cleaning on the reverse and overall a neat coin.
