So, another option for trade amongst the two California fractional gold pieces is this 1908 $20 gold piece.

Thank you all very much for letting me think these things out loud.

The 1908 no motto SGDE is among the most common of this type. That's good because it carries a low premium. It looks unc and very clean. My guess is 63+ maybe 64.

I mean to say that this coin carries a low premium in the US. I think in the UK they charge VAT and also in many jurisdictions. Would be curious as to what premiums gold and gold bullion carries in Rome and other EU and non EU European markets that you have access to.

@numismatic student, My trade has this at 1950 euro, which I think is too high. Unless he accepts a higher trade value for the coin I am looking to trade. I have a lot of posts on this forum with my various finds, near finds, hits, misses, LOADS of questions (and the forum has been wonderful without fail) etc. I find the 08 no motto has a higher premium here than it should. I can usually buy gold at 3-6% over spot. I buy at a local gold shop - the buy back rate here is terrible - so the price over spot is just a small part of the profit the shop makes. This trade is between myself and another collector I have dealt with before. He and I have bought and sold a lot over the past few years.

On the other hand, silver has been very inexpensive here until recently (premiums have caught up). I have a few buyers that sell to me at melt. Over the course of two years I was able to pile up a lot and travel with it to the U.S. and change for gold. I wouldn't do it again, but it was interesting and something to do for a while. I still buy when I can buy silver below melt, but I probably won't carry 20lbs in my carry on bag next summer.

Morgans and Peace dollars I buy at 20-35 euro. My average is probably about 27. Again, I buy in all grades and all conditions and have found a few better semi-key date coins which likely put me far ahead using this approach.

I also buy just about anything I find below retail (coins, chess sets, tarot, zippos)... And then I sell some and keep some. My sell to keep rate is probably 90/10.

Looks like definite friction on Liberty's knee and breast. A few small contact marks but lots of luster. AU-58.

Thank you everyone. Given the trade value he's putting on it, I think I am going to pass.
