I new to collecting coins. I recently acquired 2 federal bank rolls of 1958-d pennys. As I was looking through them all, this one in particular stood out to me. Can someone tell me if this is possibly an error coin or nothing at all. Thanks again for any and all replies.
@ant, first welcome to CCF. Second, to me that looks more like Machine Doubling rather than a doubled die. Here is a link to the two known DDOs for this year/mint cent to help you with your research:
Certainly a very dramatic feature. As others have said, Machine Doubling is common for that era of coins. There almost looks like separation on the bottom of the 5, and the fuzziness of the top almost looks more consistent with Die Deterioration Doubling. Hard to distinguish with the pixelization.
Are you using a scope? The mods here recommend using a memory card or cable with a scope. It produces much sharper pictures and better depth than a phone pic of a screen.
