I posted this as a raw coin about 2 years ago. The general consensus was MS 64 PL and I agreed. Two years later I finally submitted it to ANACS. After conservation they didn't agree. ANACS has a rep of over-grading but I'm not so sure about this one. Thoughts/opinions?

Pretty coin nonetheless...
I think I would have to agree with our general consensus on a 64PL, and appears ANACS could have given a grade of 63PL...

I think I also see a re-punched mintmark, so pinning down the vam# may not be too hard...

Looks MS-63+ PL to me. Could be DMPL, near impossible to tell from photos.

63pl. Unfortunate that all the hits appear on the cheek and the field on front of the face which are the focal points. Everywhere else it looks pristine. What was the reason for the conservation?

MS63PL for the same reasons as numismatic student points out.

Can't guess what ANACs said -- maybe 65PL? -- but numismatic student's take seems right to me. The OBV on its own barely makes 62PL (or 62DMPL -- can never really tell from photos), but that reverse is way up in 66PL territory. Normally that would net out to at least 64, but the obverse hits degrade eye appeal. I'd guess 63PL

Thanks for the repllies. Judging by those, looks like ANACS "might" have under-graded this one a bit. I guess the pics could have been better also.

I think the over-grading rep was from years ago. For my submission early this year I felt most of them were graded 1-2 points low.

they really whacked that one for the obv. I agree they missed on this one. there is not enough marks/chatter etc on the obv to drop it to a 62

Think they're doing their best to rid themselves of the over grading rep and might be compensating too much. Saw a dealer on a recent Youtube video who had 4 out of 5 ANACS coins upgraded when submitted to PCGS

Yep, undergraded. I'd only bother to re-submit with a large batch of other coins, though.
