I recently bought 50 dollar coins. Some are sackies some are SBA's but most are presidential. Are any of the Presidential dollars worth looking into? The guy who cashed them in before I bought them said they are all error coins. Some of them look like they have faint letters under what's already pressed on the rim. It would cost way too much for me to send them all off for grading. What should a newbie do to see if there's anything more to these coins other than filling up my Whitman folder?

I suggest you send us some pictures. One at a time, front back and close up of area in question. Once we see what you have then we will help you, remember to tell what your concern is on each coin.

The front and back seem normal, it just looks like there's light writing on the rim of the rims, under where everything is punched. I can't get it to show well with my camera.

Photo suggestion: Elevate a coin by setting it on, perhaps, a small water bottle. This might allow you to get a usable photo. You didn't mention whether your camera is a phone or regular one.

don't know of anything special going on with the Presidential dollars (yet)

I read somewhere there are half punches or double punches on the rim.

I would postulate that somebody who honestly thought they had fifty error coins, wouldn't just cash them in for face value - they'd try to sell them. I would hazard a guess, without seeing any pics, that most of them are "phantom errors" and not actual error coins. Coins that are "missing In God We Trust", when it's intentional for that design/year and IGWT is stamped on the rim, for example.

Pics would help make certain.

I just use my phone for pictures. The guy could have been full of it, for all I know. However, I paid face value for them so I'm probably fill up the Whitman folders as mu h as I can and then take the rest to the bank.
