Why would just single that 1 out when there are at least another 21 for sale at almost the same price. Honestly if someone would spend that much for a coin let them. We can't protect everyone or actually anyone from being clueless.

That is just one of the many 0 feedback sellers that have probably come over from Etsy. ebay is now loaded with listings like this. sad, sad. Just look up 1944 Lincoln Cent (error) no mint mark, close "L" rim error. Tons of the same scam listings all by "new" sellers with 0 feedback.

It's such a shame. ebay used to screen listings for authenticity but I guess their desire to make more money has overtaken their need to be honest. I actually did get a reply back from the seller who had this to say: "Excuse me , mine is not a fraud it what my grandfathers . Please leave me alone." Here is a copy of what I wrote to him: "Hello. This listing is a FAKE rarity. All SBA dollars were minted with the same design by Frank Gasparro. You have no sales history and no reputation but if you happen to sell this coin, taking advantage of an unschooled buyer, that will change and you will be known as a swindler that no one will buy from. Your listing (and other, similar FRAUDS) is/are being discussed on every major coin forum and ebay has been alerted about your fraud. Stop this!"

Hey, didn't you all notice that the coin is silver? I guess that's what makes it worth $1200.

Unfortunately when someone types a coin description such as "1979 dollar coin" into google they get a bunch of ebay results for "Rare 1979 SBA dollar with fg" priced at $1500. They then post theirs to ebay and the cycle continues. As far as the masses are concerned these are correct and reasonable prices for their rare coins. It's what google showed them, they have no way of knowing that googl's algorithm is crap and it loves pulling the highest asked prices it can find.

I once bought a silver coin from a Chinese seller with ZERO feedback on ebay...yes, I too like to live dangerously Dont let it get to you so much, there are tons of coins on Etsy and ebay that are mistaken listings at high values for what they actually are or at least for what they are really worth, and sometimes you also get intentional mistaken coins like that. Intentional fraud like fake silver and gold or coins are probably the main ones to try to get delisted. There are tons of threads here, some are funny in what people ask for coins. We obviously want people to be able to sell ungraded errors or varieties as many are not of high enough value to warrant sending in for a certification but best to work on educating yourself so you don't buy something that is not worth what you pay for it. The feedback system on ebay is pretty good to get a feel also for a seller, one with no or few sales may not be someone to buy things that may be sketchy.

Caveat emptor. Anyone who would buy an $800 coin from the Internet without any idea what they are buying is going to get what they deserve. It's immoral and unfortunate, but you cannot be a baby bunny in a den of wolves and accept no responsibility for your own actions.

I contacted the seller for grins, with "I'm curious what makes you think this coin is rare. They ALL have the FG designers initials." Their response: "I'm learning and it's what the ai suggestion from ebay was . I'm new . But I've been talking to different people. I don't believe it is rare I'm not sure . I'll have to get it checked out more from a professional. Because I've had different people tell me different stuff." I have no idea what they mean about "AI did it" but I've never posted on ebay. All I can figure is that the No FG half dollars somehow morphed into a dollar coin having FG being rare. But who knows what goes on in people's brains, especially when they think they'll strike it rich.

I shared a couple of messages with the seller as well. I can't say for sure, but he sounds like a young kid who is trying to make some money on ebay selling coins. No problem there. The trouble is, he doesn't know anything about the hobby or coin values. The "AI" he refers to must be artificial intelligence. Leave it to computers to write a description that not even a scammer would ever dream up ("rare" FG initials?). Anyway, I sent him a link to the coin's description on the NGC website so he could see the coin's true value. I also suggested he buy a Red Book. He said he's new to all this, is trying to learn, and thanked me. So I say, go easy on the guy.

Looking further, there are a bunch of these with "[Rare FG - Frank Gasparro]" in the title, or similar, with ridiculous asking prices. Maybe someone started this and ebay really is suggesting it in the title, I have no idea. There's even one touting "No FG" (rare of course) but the FG is plainly visible. There's no end to the nonsense on ebay I guess.
