There is an old post about dies, I made a new one.
I've been wanting a US Mint die for a while. The mint has sold canceled dies a few times and others were sold as scrap then dealer sold them to public. 1995 1996 proof dies were canceled with an X which allows for most of the die to be visible. The other dies were canceled with torch or grinder leaving little or no design left. Those without design are not expensive. But the Olympic dies are pricey, have appreciated in value.
The mint sold about 2,800 1995 1996 dies at $49 each. I just got a 1996 dollar die with the high jump, COA, die cap, bag, original mailing box. 217 high jump dies were sold. Mine struck 716 coins then was removed from service due to field spots called starburst. I like it, fun to have an actual mint die with most of the design, scarce. Here is pic. Below pic is link to YouTube video about canceled dies, an overview by The Coin Box. He has more in depth die videos also.
Don't know much about striking a metal planchet with the die and all the force it would take. I'm afraid I'd damage the die. I could use clay just for fun, let the clay dry to have an example.
I bought one from the Mint way back when - mine is a Track and Field Silver Dollar obverse die. I've used it at multiple Boy Scout Merit Badge Camps as a visual training aid. It has worked well!

commems, glad you got one from the mint and used it for education. According to the video some collectors tried to get one but were left out. The mint went online in 1998 so the 1995 1996 dies may have been sold mail order, first come first served.
I see cancelled dies for auction on a regular basis. Many of them are certified by a TPG. They are generally fairly recent, so I assume the faces have been totally obliterated. Yet they sell for more than you would expect.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
Yes, NGC has certified some mint dies. They did so with the Fred Weinberg die collection which was sold last year. Some dies are on ebay. In ebay search line I typed " State Quarter coin and die set." Some sellers have them for $40-$70 range, nothing left of design, all the State Quarter dies were completely ground off.
