Good morning

I'm curious to learn more about these sets. Are they desirable/worth a premium or are they basically bullion coins? Are these worth holding onto? Do you collect them?

Specifically this set is from 1986 (I even have two identical ones). Non circulating coins are not really my things but at least these were issued by an actual gov mint as opposed to just bullion companies I guess?

How much are they worth? I literally just saw an auction on ebay end at $21.5 with the coin alone. One with box as "buy it now" for less than $20 is unsold. Pretty much look like bullion?

Thank you in advance for any info/guidance/comments!

Have a nice weekend!

The US Mint has been releasing commemorative one dollar and half dollar coins for a long time with many different subjects, people, events, etc. The older dollar coins are 90% silver. Some are a little more popular than others and mintages varied. As you found out, ebay sold listings show they often don't sell for a lot. I have some and still enjoy having them.

Here's some info about them:

Mintage was pretty high on these, as the U.S. Mint was just getting started on the Modern Commemoratives era in the 1980s.

My Two Cents:
These are basically worth bullion value. I have a few that I received over the years, but am not actively collecting them.

Thank you all!

I'm still a bit conflicted but I think I might perhaps keep them. Kind of feel bad getting rid of them.

My original plan was to keep only circulating coins (proof or otherwise) but maybe I'll rethink my position to keep whatever has legal tender, even if commemoratives, as opposed just medals (I found many of those too, either issued by the mint or private companies).

I'm not a big fan of those bulky and made to look nice packaging. They are often low quality (some of the 40-50 years old boxes are really in bad shape, definitely not archival quality, breaking apart). Plus they are all different in sizes, take up so much space. Not my thing
At the same time though I feel bad removing the coins from the original packaging..

Yeah coin boxes can take up a lot of room. Some people take the coins out of their boxes to store the coins in a home safe or at the bank, keep the boxes somewhere else. This makes more storage room. Even if the coin boxes are in bad shape in my opinion they're still worth keeping to sell with the coin. On ebay you see coins with original boxes and some without box, I prefer having the box.

These are issued by an Act of Congress through the United States Mint and are of a subject worthy of commemoration as opposed to many issued before then and after then. The Statue of Liberty in 1986 and the United States Constitution in 1987 are subjects of national importance.

I have many of the modern commemoratives, but by no means all of them, all in their original packaging, just the way I prefer them. The amount of room is not that much, at least for me.
