After getting off to a great start with some good but not great boxes, I am on a streak of about 10 boxes without silver of any kind other than some proofs. Last night my son and I opened up 2 boxes and settled with 1 NIFC and a 1974S Proof with a little circulation wear. Pulled out about 12-15 others that were in excellent shape for filler quality but that was it. I had these two boxes in the vault for a month and had waited because the first 8 that I ordered had been uneventful. It was the order before that that had been fruitful.... Ordering 6 boxes today to check out this weekend. Maybe things will turn soon :)

Just a note; a proof coin found in circulation is called an impaired proof.

I am actually more excited to see proof finds than silver, so call those finds a win!

That's just the way it is with boxed halves, unfortunately... just keep plugging away is all you can do. Eventually you'll hit something great (or so I'm told)... I've never pulled more than 7 silvers out of a box, which is why I mainly hunt CWRs of them these days.

Do you also look for the obvious double dies, RPMs, clashes, etc.?

I do look for some of the errors but probably not to the extent that I should, we went through our boxes last night in probably 1.5 hours so not too much time was spent cherry picking....

I kinda think at this point if you're not cherry-picking varieties then there is no break even point on MWR hunting versus the effort involved.

Just in case you can use it, years ago I compiled a list from everything I could find online as to major doubled dies, rotated dies, known clashes, etc. I am posting here for you.

BTW, I know clashes can, and possibly do happen for a lot of dates, however, the ones listed are noted for a lot of them. The 83 has been found with very deep clashing.

Kennedy half dollar Roll Searching Checklsit
Compiled by Earle42 coincommunity.com

Date: ...RPM..DDO..No FG..Clashed Die..Rotated Die
1971-D: ..RPM..DDO........Clashed Die..Rotated Die
1972:........DDO
1972-D: ............No FG..Clashed Die
1973-D:..RPM..DDO......Clashed Die
1974-D:.....DDO..No FG..Clashed Die
1977-D:.....DDO.......Clashed Die
1982: .............No FG
1983: .............No FG..Clashed Die
1984-D:..RPM
1988:: ............No FG.........Rotated Die
1989:............No FG**
1989-D:..RPM

- Note the No FG examples, except for the 1982, are just die polshing events that can, and do occur for other dates as well.
- Former PCGS president Ron Guth "discovered" yhe 1972D No FG and therefore PCGS decided to slab them. Other companies followed. Therefore a market was created for this date. Polishing events have removed the initials from other dates as well (I personally have found a 1989, and a 1974). These should have no extra value being it was only the company hype that elevated the 1972-D into a collectable item.

The above list is a compilation off various lists found online after being verified with pictures or actual coins.
rotateddies.com lists the following:
1965 (100#730; and 180#730;), 1967(137#730;, 170#730;, and 176#730;), 1972-S (180#730;), 1973-D (120#730;), 1973-S(180#730;), 1979-D (178#730;), 1984-D (180#730;), 1984-S (180#730;), 1984-S (180#730;), 1988-P (180#730;)
Not listed at that website: 1971-D and 1983-S.

Straight FG (type I), and flarged FG (type II):
1964 P&D, proof 1964-D, proof 1968-D 1969-D, 1970-D.

TBH, I don't think that most of us are doing it for the monetary rewards (or potential ones). I think most of us see it as a hobby and if we happen to find "gold", so to speak, then that is our reward.

That said, I've managed to find a few niches the past few years involving more modern coins which have actually allowed my sort-of-obsessive CRH to net me some decent profit to go along with the thrills of finding cool stuff that money can't buy. For example, I recently acquired 100 Ike dollars at face value from one of my local banks. I also had 6 on hand at the time... made a couple of 13 coin sets and sold the other 80 in groups of 20 and netted $76 when all was said and done - not bad for an investment of maybe an hour of my time...

Earle, that is an awesome list. Do you have one for other denominations as well?

John, I meant more in a satisfaction sense, although I suppose the financial meaning of break-even could apply as well. Obviously if you pull only one 1964 JFK, that might not even cover gas for the bank run. It might be cheaper to just buy one.

What I meant was more along the lines of: can you be satisfied with the effort for the reward that you receive? For example, yesterday I did my usual 400 nickels. I got one pre-1960 nickel, a relatively nice 1959. If you are bulk hunting just for key dates and the tiny number of the "best" obvious varieties (like D/S), can you extract enjoyment from CRH if your hit rate is below 1%, not even considering coin condition?

Contrast that to hunting for varieties, and examining every coin. I am trying to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment out of those 400 nickels. That's bi-weekly, but with only 200 nickels per week, I still manage to ask a lot of questions on the forum, learn a lot of neat stuff, have fun conversations. Your method of accumulating and selling certain single-date nickel rolls is another example of squeezing more value from CRH. I think if I were just getting skunked on every batch of nickels, I would feel like I couldn't ever reach a positive (emotional and intellectual) return on my time investment. Accepting that you will probably never hit a positive financial return on CRH—including an appropriate valuation on your time—is implicit to it being a hobby rather than a functional business.

Not sure I would count your 100 Ikes as CRH. That was a great find, and one you knew how to locate based on experience. I would call that a cherry pick from a bank. If you had to sort through 10000 dollar coins to find those 100 Eisenhower dollars, would your mental calculus have changed?

This is great Earle42, thank you for sharing!!

Glad to be able to help.

Some online lists online included things like a "No F" 1977-D half dollar. I purged these from my own list since it was just a result of die polishing.

For fun you may also want to keep an eye out for an interesting 1994-P half. I found at over half of a roll of them. A large die chip is directly below the eagle on the REV as well as area of the bottom feathers having die chips along the bottom. These coins also have spikes coming off of JFKs nose.

Please note the following graphic of mine is labeled incorrectly...the extra mark is not an extra "device," it is a die chip. Graphic made many, many moons ago before I was aware the terminology would be in error.
Its-Already-A-Cold-Winter-In-My-JFK-Coin-Roll-Hunting

And here are the spikes on the nose:
Please note the following graphics of mine are also possibly is labeled incorrectly...I see nothing in a graphic n overlay indicating these piskes can be clash marks
Its-Already-A-Cold-Winter-In-My-JFK-Coin-Roll-Hunting

Its-Already-A-Cold-Winter-In-My-JFK-Coin-Roll-Hunting

Sometimes you have to tilt the coin to see the spikes.

Years ago I thought the OBV spikes were clash marks but now think I was mistaken. An overlay shows nothing in that area to make any clash let alone spikes. I am not sure what the spikes are.
