Hello. I am a newbie to this forum, and no very little about coins, other than I have a few old ones I've collected and hung to for years, only because I've thought it was the right thing to do. Okay, so today I've come across a 2001 toonie in my change that was different. It's actually silver, rather than whatever usual metal is normally used. I know it's silver because I've done the magnet test, and I can tell when a coin is silver by both look and the sound it makes when it's chinging against other coins or when dropped on the table. So it's silver on the outer rim, and with the gold center, polar bear and Queen E on the flip side. There are no special markings that I can see, comparing it to another toonie, just that the metal is silver. I can't find anything about it at the RCM site. I was wondering if perhaps it was some sort of special edition coin stamped in silver and sold as a collectors piece, that perhaps somebody decided to use as a regular toonie, like my cousin that took a $50 bill from her father's wallet once and went to the store to buy a chocolate bar with the $2 bill she thought it was. Of course she was only a wee child at the time! I'm grateful for any information anyone can give me. Thanks in advance!

Can we see a picture of it, Debbie? There have been a number of toonies where the outer ring is silver.

Sounds like someone decided to spend the $2 coin out of a proof set...

Thank you for your replies. I will take some pictures of it tomorrow, when I have daylight. I tried tonight, but my lighting isn't working well for a decent picture.

I would also say, out of a proof set.

Yep, proof set. Note how the lettering on the face seems to be "silver white" (opaque) as compared to regular circulation coinage where the lettering would be (for want of a better term) reflective.
And yes, that is real silver on the outer sleeve.

So then it's nothing special. Any idea if it's worth anything, or shall I just add it to my pocket change for my next Timmies?

No, it is something special. The outer ring is silver, not steel or nickel. It is a keeper.
