It is virtually impossible to tell with 100% certainty whether a coin has been cleaned or not strictly through a photograph. That coins is certified and sealed by ICCS, isn't it? If ICCS doesn't think a coin is cleaned, I would be inclined to trust their judgement.

If it was cleaned I wonder if it would be mentioned on the grading certificate as so. I'm too new to the hobby to tell...Looks nice though!

When a coin is referred to as cleaned, it means its surface has been damaged in some way. A cleaned silver coin usually has a loss of luster or is heavily scratched with hairline scratches. But a dipped silver coin usually is not referred to as cleaned unless it has been excessively dipped. Removing dirt and grime from a coin is not considered "cleaning" in the sense that the coin has been damaged; although cleaned of dirt and grime. And in fact it is a good idea to remove dirt and grime from a coin (without damaging it) to prevent corrosion that sets in over several decades.

Hi, SilverMaple, If the coin in question had been cleaned, the grading company would have had "CLEANED" on the certificate.

If ICCS says it's been cleaned, then it has ... if the card doesn't say "Cleaned" then you're home free.

Hmm, I see that's an ebay photo though ... is that a coin you're thinking of buying and have doubts as to whether it's cleaned? Ask the seller if it's marked "cleaned" or not. Then make certain you're buying from a seller with a good reputation/feedback.

Is this the auction? http://cgi.ebay.com/1935-CANADA-SIL...62_W0QQitemZ320354495605QQihZ011QQcategoryZ3383QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem The seller's feedback is good (other than the high shipping costs) and he's sold a lot of ICCS coins, but just send him a question asking if it is marked "cleaned" to ease your mind.

You know what? I never initially thought that ICCS would have put a 'cleaned' indicator on the COA..thats a very good point. However when I 1st looked at it, my initial thought was no, it has not cleaned. The reason I thought so was, I've seen dipped coins where the entire coin has taken on a 'ghosty-white' appearance, and this doesn't seem to have that characteristic. (I hope this makes sence to everyone). I then thought if it was polished then it would be so shiny that it would burn your retinas out. Its just that the haze on it looks very natural. On another note, its not hard to find a 1935 in MS condition for a reasonable price, so that was another indicator as well. Im not a big time grader in the least, so in conclusion I suppose I still could have been wrong.

When ICCS puts "Cleaned" on their COAs it is right in the spot on the card that is covered by the top of the dollar, so I can understand getting confirmation that the designation isn't there.
