Hello everyone,

I go to a Sunday market in Rome every week. Typically, I look for things to buy and sell and put the profits into american coins that I like.

For the past three weeks I've bought two Morgans and an occasional Peace dollar from a regular vendor. I've posted the less common dates but most are common date coins.

He held an 1881 s and this 1884 cc aside for me this week. I quickly glanced - misread the cc as an O - pinged and paid €62.10. In Italy, it is common for a seller to say a price and add 'e un caffe' (and a coffee). Thinking I got two common date coins I left.

Confirmation on this one would make me feel better although I believe it is genuine. Diameter is right. It pings, nice luster, looks right under a loupe, and weighs 26.70.

Let me know what you think.

I say it's a nice score. Appears to be mid-MS as well. Congratulations.

Thanks @pristine - It seems to match up on my last photo, but the lighting does look off in the top photos.

Sure you thought it was an O..

It's ok, we've all cherry picked, nice score!

Thank you everyone.

Honestly, I didn't realize it was a CC until I got it home.

It's hard to contextualize this market unless you've been. The market is called 'porta portese'; it's crowded, hot, shady, busy and mostly interesting.

I approached the guy's table and he said - in Italian - 'I kept two in my pocket for you; 65, 65, I need 65'; I can function in italian, but it still takes me a 10-20 seconds to translate in my head.

I looked at them, pinged, put them on top of one another, flipped them over and saw two mintmarks - I figured an 81 and 84 S and/or O. I am NEVER expecting a CC, unless the coin is obviously fake. I have seen about a dozen of those; I have seen two graded CCs, but never one in the wild. I offered 30 each . . . 30 each plus a coffee accepted. . . I put them in my pocket and left.

After, I saw about 10 more Morgans - all authentic - all of the sellers were showing me Etsy ads with the same common date stuff priced at $800-1200 and I could have a polished 78 P for 300 euro. That happens ALL the time.

I got the two Morgans home - along with two ASEs - a 91 and 95 - and saw the mintmark. Understanding my wife won't get it - I posted here.

Thanks everyone,

R.

So you paid 1884-O AU price? I think you owe the seller another coffee. :)
I'm not good at this but it appears to be VAM2 as well. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...884-CC_VAM-2
Edit: Wait, so you paid HALF of 1884-O AU price? Two more coffees...

Thanks @kbb, I will take a look at the VAM. I know nearly nothing about VAMs; buying American coins for me is a casual hobby because it connects me to America, I have a slight advantage in the market, and I find it very enjoyable.

Really depends on your relationship with the fellow. Caveat emptor (well, caveat venditor) applies to sellers as well as buyers. But if it were me, I'd slip the guy another hundred euros.

Just for my own entertainment, here is your coin vs VAM2. Die cracks all seem to match. PCGS price guide says in MS63 that bumps it up another US$75 but who knows.
