Someone paid $149 for this coin on ebay. It was described as having "VF Details".

I call that a "numismatic crime".

Hmmmm. I have a few extra '21 Peace dollars that are much better than that - perhaps I should list them.
But don't blame the seller - blame the fool who bought it.

Meh. They used to be less expensive in this condition. But that's where the market is, I guess. At least it isn't holed.

I've seen a lot of listings like this - they say "details" in a manner that makes it sound like they're referring to the details on the coin to an uneducated buyer, but it's an out for them to be able to say that they posted it as a "details" coin. How did we get to that nomenclature anyway? It should be "problem" or "defect" etc instead of details. Details implies that they're just being more descriptive.

You're overthinking this. It is accurately described as a Details coin using common parlance.

Common parlance for us maybe, but as I said, an uninformed purchaser has no idea that "details" means something negative. These sellers typically say something like "has UNC details", which seems to be what the OP saw.

That is one excellent photo--from the listing, I presume? Wonder what the reverse looks like.
