I came across this coin and while examining the reverse I noticed what looked to me like DDD on some of the letters of The United States of America. I took a closer look and noticed some of the letters appear to be slit and notched. I'm pretty confident on my abilities to differentiate between worthless and true doubling, but this has me puzzled a bit. I'm still thinking it's DDD, but I would appreciate some other opinions.

Not really seeing any Die Deterioration Doubling. Looks normal to me.

Errers, what do you make of the notching of the A, E, & F?

This one is interesting. have you looked to see if it has been reported to VV or the other sites yet?

@Dearborn I've checked several different sights attempting to find out what the doubling actually is, including VV. None have images that show this type. My interest is how and why it happens, because personally I've not come across this in past searches.

There is definitely some Die Deterioration present. You can see the light haze stretching rimward from the lettering, particularly the tops. My gut feel is that the notching has nothing to do with that. The notching is level with the devices, clockwise, and in one specific radius—the die wear is none of those things.

The picture resolution and focus are good, but it's a little hard to see in grayscale. Any chance we could get a relatively zoomed in color picture of just the letters?

Brandmeister I'll need to take more images and post them. I was having issues with glare when I took the original images.

I have several 2020,2021, 2022 cents that have that same appearance.. If you turn the coin under your scope, you will most likely see that the "apparent doubling" is not there. In my opinion, what we are seeing is slight DDD.

@jfeed I've seen it on a few other 2021 LSC's the last few days, and it makes me think even more that it's DDD. I am going to hang on to a few of them anyway.

It is certainly interesting looking. Thanks for posting color pics. I agree, for a holding cost of 1 cent, they are keepers for future consideration.

I think it's just a trick from the lighting.

This is Die Deterioration and glare causing the look of split serifs.
If it was a doubled die this extreme we'd be seeing EPU skinny and wavy looking.
All looks normal to me.
No extra thickness normal penny
