Hello, CCF, your feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. This is my coin. I see a lot of ugly toned 1875-S, but not quite like this. The toning makes this look very nicked up, but it is not. There are a couple of legit scratches at 3 o'clock on the obverse and perpendicular to and below the eagles' beak on the reverse. The toning makes what appear to be very faint clash marks (guess on my part) pop above the wing and below the referenced scratch. Looking at this area with a 14x loop, it does not look like any sort of tooling and the lines seem too uniform to be random, hence my guess that maybe they are due to die clash? As it pertains to toning, is this possible or most likely the result of cleaning and re-toning? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adam

The problem with it being die clash is that there has to be something on the obverse to be clashed with, and there isn't. It does seem curious that the scratches don't appear to extend into the neck or wing.

Yeah, kbbpll, I thought maybe the shield but it would seem to be on the wrong side and orientation. Given that the devices are incus, it seems like the lines would have to come off the die since they don't pass through the devices. In the next couple of days I may to try to take better pictures with the wife's new phone which has an outstanding camera compared to mine.

If the lines are raised, they are die polish lines.

Well, it's been a minute, but circling back on this post. I found a PCGS AU55 that matches the reverse on this coin such as the die polish lines, the very weak lettering in United States, and the missing lower serif in the "S" in CENTS. I did take a couple of pics outside for some natural lighting. I was a little surprised at the color of the toning in natural light. The last two pics are angled to better show the surfaces. So two questions, does the toning look natural or artificial, and two what sort of grade would you give it? Note, I have no plans to slab the coin, just curious what you all think. Thx, Adam

Was surfing ebay looking at double dimes and came across an 1875-S and one with the same reverse and a scarcity of R-5. Was hoping for a BF-3 die pairing, obverse 3 and reverse B. Sadly confirmed that mine was not obverse 3, but definitely reverse B. Turns out obverse 11 was paired first with obverse C, followed by J and then back to B, bingo. So both dies were late stage and hence weak strikes.Didn't realize my copy has a small die crack on the obverse at stars 9 and 10 and the flag on the 5 buried in the denticles directly underneath 7. So BF-15R turns out to be R-3 scarcity. Fun stuff. Definitely becoming addicted to this hobby.
